AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round 2022

Sir Doug Nicholls Round (SDNR) celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and contribution to our game. For this year’s theme, the AFL acknowledges the 30th Anniversary of the Mabo decision and acknowledges the legacy of decisions and efforts of the late Eddie ‘Koiki” Mabo.

There is possibly a no bigger round of AFL than the Sir Doug Nicholls Round. One of the many marvels of the round is the stunning, special designs of the jumpers and the game balls. With each jumper from a different artist, telling a different story, as well as the unique game balls design, there is lots to celebrate.

The SDNR 2022 Official Game Ball has been designed by Jennifer “Lulu” Coombes, a Tiwi artist from Pirlangimpi Melville Island. The limited release ball sees proceeds from every purchase, donated to support Aboriginal & Torres Straight Islander Community Programs. The full range can be viewed here.

“The kulama design to me means celebration of life past, present, and future. I wanted to use it as a meaning to celebrate the life of all the indigenous players past, present and future, that have walked the path in their footy careers with the AFL.

Spear = Strength

Kulama = Celebration

Armbands = Culture

Footprints = Past, present & future Indigenous players & volunteers who have walked the path.” - Jennifer “Lulu” Coombes – Tiwi Art by Lulu, Tiwi Artist from Pirlangimpi Melville Island.

The game balls are all set and ready to go. They will be utilised in the AFL matches across rounds 10 and 11. Be sure to check out the video of the balls in production below:
